NZBN Business Passport trial

The NZBN Business Passport is a new digital credential that lets you securely prove your business identity and your authority to act on behalf of a business. It uses information held on the NZBN Register and is stored in the Govt.nz app. You can share it online, or show it in person and have it checked using the Verify Me app.

About the NZBN Business Passport trial

MBIE is the first government agency to be accredited under the Digital Identity Services Trust Framework. This means we meet the Trust Framework's requirements for providing secure, trusted digital identity services. Accredited Service - Trust Framework Authority

We're trialling the NZBN Business Passport to test the technology, understand the user experience and gather feedback before the service becomes more widely available. Westpac NZ will be the first organisation to take part. The trial is currently by invitation, and Westpac is the only organisation that will accept it.

What is happening during the trial?

The first phase of the trial focuses on issuing NZBN Business Passports and testing the application process.

Selected Westpac business customers will be invited to apply for an NZBN Business Passport and share feedback on their experience. Westpac will be the first organisation to accept the NZBN Business Passport in a real-world setting. Once this is available, participants will be able to link their Business Passport to Westpac One® for Business.

Taking part is by invitation at this stage, but if you'd like to try the Business Passport and share your feedback, we'd love to hear from you. Register your interest below and we'll be in touch. Just keep in mind that Westpac is currently the only organisation that will accept it.

Why are we doing this?

Businesses are often asked to provide the same information to many different organisations. Digital credentials offer a secure way to share trusted information, so there's less paperwork for businesses and more confidence for the organisations they deal with.

The NZBN Business Passport is part of wider work to make it easier for businesses to prove who they are and share verified information digitally, while keeping them in control of their information and protecting their privacy.

Your NZBN Business Passport is held by you in the Govt.nz app, not stored centrally. You choose what information you share and who you share it with. Some details about your business can be included in your Business Passport even if they aren't publicly visible on the NZBN Register.
