Applying for an NZBN if you're self-employed
Are you self-employed (a sole trader) and in business in New Zealand? You're eligible to get an NZBN.
Your business may already have an NZBN
Many businesses have already applied for an NZBN. Start by checking to see if you already have one. If you don’t have an NZBN, you can apply to get one.
Tip — If you have already started your online application, log in and continue to your saved application.
What you need to apply
You’ll need a couple of items on-hand to complete your application.
1. IRD number
You need the IRD number used by the business – this may be your personal IRD number. We use the IRD number to confirm that this matches an existing business, and to check that you haven’t already been allocated an NZBN.
2. Proof of identity
You’ll also need to provide proof of your identity for verification. Once your identity has been verified, an NZBN is allocated and you can start using your NZBN straightaway.
Your New Zealand driver licence or passport is best
Most NZBN applications will be processed instantly if you can provide either your New Zealand driver licence or passport. Please ensure that the name on the application matches the name on the proof of identity you're providing for instant verification.
If you don't have a New Zealand driver licence or passport
We’ll need you to upload details from one of the following identity documents:
- New Zealand birth certificate
- New Zealand citizenship certificate
- overseas passport.
It will take a little longer to review these details, but no more than 3 days. You can check the status of your application at any time.
If you’re not a New Zealand citizen, but you're living in New Zealand and running a business here, you may need to provide additional documentation to show you’re able to work in New Zealand. If this applies to you, we will get in touch and let you know what we need.
3. RealMe login and a MyNZBN account
