Sole traders, partnerships and trusts

If you don’t have an NZBN, you can apply to get one here. All you need to do is select what sort of business yours is, gather some key information and follow a few simple instructions.

You can get an NZBN for your own business, or on behalf of a business you have authority to act for (for example, as a business’ accountant or bookkeeper). You’ll need to know the business type.

Note

If you’re a sole trader, partnership or trust, you are only eligible to get an NZBN if you are currently in business in New Zealand.

You’re in business, as defined by the New Zealand Business Number Act 2016(external link), if you acquire or supply goods or services, or acquire or dispose of land (but not if you do this as a consumer, employee, or as an individual member of an unincorporated entity).

A business can be non-profit and can also be carried out free-of-charge.

Identifying your business type

If you’re not sure what type of business yours is, or you’re setting up a business, have a look at our An NZBN for every business page.

Some businesses already have an NZBN

Registered companies and many other organisations have already been assigned an NZBN. These are generally organisations already on government registers (including the Companies Register).
